Overview

In one sentence

Period-5 tape; a binary counter of drifting 3-cell digits feeds a left-edge bit counter that absorbs them

Mechanism

How it works: 3 notes
  • Period-5 tape 10110. Right counter: little-endian digits 110=1 / 100=0 in the stripes; each sweep adds 1 with carry.
  • A carried digit moves 5 cells left (digit k drifts 1 block per 2^k sweeps); overflow adds two 0-digits at the right end.
  • Left counter: big-endian bits 10=1 / 00=0, +1 per 2 sweeps; absorbing the lowest digit halves it (phases X/Y follow).

note
Different mechanism (unary blocks at the 0^inf edge); its S1/Inc1 shape fails 0/5 here (3 halt). Only BECv7's digit-list layout (Inductive RD + bin_inc) carries over.
Proof strategy & riskshow the formal proof will go · 3 risks to watch

Encode the hub as (phase, W, separator, W2, g, digit list with gaps) using BECv7-style Inductive lists. Prove R1-R5 with es/ind, R6-R8 and absorption with follow/mid, init to the first hub, then nonhalt via multistep_nonhalt + progress_nonhalt_cond on a well-formed-hub invariant. Missing first: Y-phase absorption and separator entry/exit rules.

  • ▲Separator regime (left part 10 W1 0|110 W2 ..., about 40% of hubs) is entered after Y-phase absorption; its entry/exit rules are not found yet.
  • ▲The invariant must show g>=2 after every absorption and that digit gaps never collide (a spacing lemma on G_i).
  • ▲Likely a 30-60 KB proof; the trio is correlated, so a stall here also stalls #21 and #22.

Stopped by Dennis 2026-10-10: cryptid candidate; Rocq rule reduction later, low priority. Fatal gap open: the absorption-safety lemma (old O2, now the configuration predicate Safe(w, 2g-1-d_1), proof.md 3.3) is not inductive, and no strengthening X is known. Safety depends on the left counter u avoiding a sparse set of unsafe values (abs0 undefined at segment 1^m / 1^(m-1)0; new marker within 2 of a leading marker at the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 points) at t=0 absorptions after a leading-O birth (ABS0 at u = 2^m - 2). The real trajectory came within 2 sweeps of halting: at step 86,265, Dep(O111000;1;111100;9,4,2,0,0,0); the same configuration with word O111100 halts 18,861 steps later. Later margins are 7-13% of Delta, but u/Delta at ABS0 fills the band [1.6066, 2.0006], whose top edge maps onto the 3/4 unsafe point, so no band argument closes it. Cryptid protocol triggered (proof.md 5.3): heuristically probviously non-halting (about one birth per doubling of Delta, hit probability O(1/Delta)), but no structural reason. Needs Dennis's priority call: stop or continue. Also open (major): L and the ABS rules are checked, not derived as window-lemma chains. Closed this pass: O1 replaced by P_k (proved, 2.36M/3.05M exhaustive transitions), L precondition (right context starting 1,0; sharp), edge cases |w|=1 and '', spacing >= 3, H4 needs +2s for strips, h_1 = 161 at step 300,628,504. check_proof.py full SUMMARY PASS 36/36. (status.json, 2026-10-10)
observer's note
Mechanism found: two coupled binary counters, no Collatz-like branching. 8 rule families validated (696/696); separator-regime rules still open.

○ Checkpoint B: no note from Dennis found

  • notes.md L75: - Checkpoint questions are now yes/no questions about the figures. Moved off the card (strategy calls, not figure reading; settle them in proof.md / Checkpoint B):
  • proof.md L8: - AI assistance: written by Claude (Anthropic) under Dennis's direction. Checkpoint B pending, non-blocking. The review of 2026-10-10 is in §9.
